Few of us use hot enough washing-up water to get dishes really clean. Discover how dishwashers help you blast away  germs.

Think about life in a busy household. Three meals a day, plus snacks and spillages, maybe a pet or two, and it’s no wonder we worry about germs in the kitchen. They can hang around in areas that look pretty clean – like in your sink and on dishcloths.

Washing-up woesOnly water above 60°C cleans dishes properly, but studies* have found that most of use washing-up water which is a long way from this temperature. In fact, the studies revealed that some households were washing up in water that was only 27.5°C.
 
Water inside a dishwasher is heated up to 75°C, which gives you a much more hygienic clean than washing dishes by hand. A fact that’s sure to make you a dishwasher enthusiast.

Hot means clean
Another issue with the hand-hot water we use for washing up is that it doesn’t clean things thoroughly. But again using a dishwasher solves that problem.

Crockery fresh from the dishwasher is cleaner than that washed in the sink. That’s because the dishwasher uses higher temperatures than our hands can stand – up to 75°C. And because a dishwasher dries everything, there’s no need to use tea towels – which themselves harbour bacteria – to dry up.

So that very hot wash, plus the enzymes in modern detergents, plus the hands-free drying process add up to one thing: hygienically clean dishes.
