Dishwashing glossary

Anti Flood Devices:

An electronic protection system against damages of the water bearing system in a dishwasher. It is able to block the water inlet in the event of a water leakage. Usually, it consist of a variety of different safety systems. Thereby, it is ensured that every possible functional disorder is covered by the system.

Auto 3 in 1 System:

Dishwashers fitted with this system adapt the washing process automatically in order to suit the needs of Multibenefit Tabs (e.g. 3 in 1 tabs). Thereby, the detergent is activated efficiently.

Auto(matic) Wash:

By choosing this programme, different sensors in the dishwasher automatically adjust the cycle length of a wash, its temperature and the number of water changes based on the soiling level and the amount of the dish load. This programme is especially appropriate for mixed loads.

Built in – Integrated:

This type of dishwasher is especially designed to be built in under a kitchen work surface. By applying existing kitchen cupboard doors on the front of the appliance, the feel of your kitchen will remain the same.

Capacity:

Whole number of place settings stated by the manufacturer, which can be cleaned and dried when loaded in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions into the dishwasher.

Child Safety Lock:

Safety device in order to prevent that children are opening the door of the dishwasher, e.g. during operation, but also when it is not in use.

Circulating pump:

Pump located in the sump under the filter system that pumps the washing water through the pipes into the spray arms.

Classic Detergent:

This type of detergent – powder, gel / liquid or tabs - only includes ingredients for cleaning the dishes but no other additional functions, e.g. rinse aid or salt function. Therefore, rinse aid and special salt need to be used in addition with classic detergents. This is necessary to ensure your crockery, cutlery and glassware are rinsed and dried thoroughly and left spotless with a brilliant shine.

Cutlery Basket:

Small basket which is placed in the lower basket of your dishwasher. It is used to store your cutlery during a wash.

Cutlery Drawer:

Drawer which is located above the upper basket of your dishwasher. It is used to store your cutlery during a wash.

dB (A):

The decibel (dB) is a unit used to measure sound intensity and other physical quantities. To account for the fact that are particularly low and high-pitched sounds appear less loud to the human ear, noise is usually measured in A-weighted decibels (dB(A)).

Delay Timer:

This additional function allows you to pre-set the start of a dishwasher cycle to any time that suits you best, e.g. you could run the dishwasher over night to use cheaper electricity rates.

Delicate Programme / Glass Programme / Gentle Programme:

Special wash to suit the needs of delicate, silverware or other special items that require a gentle cleaning at low water temperatures. The cycle is only appropriate for lightly soiled dishes.

Detergent Dosing Chamber:

Dosing device for the automatic dishwashing detergent. It is usually located at the inner side of the dishwasher door. The detergent dosing chamber needs to be filled with detergent before every wash. During each cycle, the detergent chamber opens automatically to release the detergent at the optimal time.

Dishwasher Machine Cleaner:

Over time, grease and limescale can form on critical areas in your machine, such as the spraying arms, water pipes and the sump. The purpose of this cleaning agent is to remove these deposits that may be present in the dishwashing machine. Nowadays, liquid detergents are usually used.

Drying Cycle:

Last step during most of the dishwashing cycles to dry the dishes.

Drying Fan:

To support the drying of the dishes, some appliances have a drying fan operating during the drying cycle. This ensures that the humid, hot air is transported from the interior space outside the dishwasher.

Drying Performance:

A rating from G (least efficient) to A (most efficient) which is given to a dishwasher based on how well the appliance dries the dishes during a cycle. This information needs to be mentioned on the Energy Label for all dishwasher models by the manufacturer.

Eco Programme:

Special wash with less water and energy consumption compared to the regular programme. It is suited for large loads with loosely attached normal soiling.

Energy Efficiency Rating:

A rating from D (least efficient) to A+++ (most efficient) which is given to a dishwasher based on how efficient the appliance uses the energy that is needed to run the dishwasher. This information needs to be mentioned on the Energy Label for all dishwasher models.

Filter System:

Depending on the manufacturer and the model, different filter systems are provided in a dishwasher. Usually, a filter system consists of 3 different items: (1) a flat fine filter, (2) a coarse filter with fine sieve and (3) microfilter. The purpose of the filter system is to ensure that soil which has already been removed from the dishes does not attach on the surface of the tableware again.

Final rinse:

Washing step during a dishwasher cycle in which the rinse aid is added into the rinsing water to ensure shiny dishes and assists the machine’s drying process.

Freestanding:

This appliance can be placed anywhere in the kitchen, e.g. underneath a work surface of on its own.

Half Load Option / Zone Wash Option:

If the dishwasher is only half fully loaded, this option allows you only to clean one of the dishwasher baskets. This saves water and energy.

Ion-Exchanger Unit:

Device to soften the water that is pumped from the water inlet into the dishwasher. It includes a raisin which is able to bind the hardness components (calcium and magnesium ions) in the water that are responsible for the build up of limescale. The ion-exchanger needs to be regenerated regularly to avoid having a broken dishwasher. Therefore, special salt is needed that is filled into the salt unit.

Lower Basket:

Dish rack on the bottom of the dishwasher. Due to the higher water pressure compared to the upper basket, it is especially suited for larger and heavily solid items, e.g. pots, pans and large plates.

Main Wash Cycle:

Washing step during a dishwasher cycle, in which the detergent is released and mixed with water to channel through the spray arms with high pressure spray. The water is heated up to support the cleaning process.

Multibenefit Detergent:

Gel/Liquid and tabs which include in addition to the cleaning agents also a rinse aid and salt function. Depending on the product formulation, also other functions can be added to the product, e.g. etching protection, silver protection, stainless steel shine etc.

Noise Level:

The noise level of a dishwasher needs to be mentioned on the Energy Label by, rated in dB (A).

Place Settings:

A place setting is a defined set of crockery, glass and cutlery for the use of one person. The capacity of a dishwasher is rated in place settings.

Power Scrub Programme / Intensive Programme:

For items with heavy baked-on or hard dried-on food remains like pots and pans. Due to its high water temperature it is not suited for delicate items which need to be washed at lower temperatures.

Pre Rinse Option:

A dishwasher programme which should be used to rinse off dishes with cold water if items have been stacked for several days in the dishwasher. It should be used prior to washing. No detergent is dosed during this cycle. The pre rinse is also the first step during several washing cycles to loosen soils on the dishes.

Quick Programme:

A quick wash dishwasher programme for lightly soiled dishes with very little amount of food remains that loosely attaches on the surface of the tableware.

Regular Programme:

Wash for large loads with loosely attached normal soiling.

Rinse Aid Dispenser:

Dosing device for the rinse aid. It is located at the inner side of the dishwasher door. The rinse aid dispenser contains a container so that the agent dose not need to be refilled before every wash needs to be filled with detergent before every wash. Depending on the dosing settings, a certain amount of rinse aid is dosed automatically during the rinse cycle to ensure sparkling and dry dishes at the end of the wash. A control lamp on the front panel of the dishwasher flashes when the rinse aid dispenser needs to be refilled.

Rinse Aid:

The rinse aid ensures shiny dishes and assists the machine’s drying process. It is dosed automatically during the rinsing cycle during a wash and needs to be added separately into the rinse aid dispenser regularly.

Salt Unit:

Unit which is connected with the ion exchanger unit. It contains the special salt. and contains the special salt.

Slimline Dishwasher:

This is a smaller dishwasher model which has a lower capacity due to is smaller width of 45 cm, compared regular dishwasher with 60 cm.

Special Salt:

Salt is necessary to guarantee a sufficient water softening done by the ion exchanger unit. The salt is a very pure salt which dissolves in water without residues. Unlike table salt, it contains no water-insoluble additives such as flow agents. Such agents would clog up the ion-exchanger over time and thus stop it working. Only special salt can guarantee a perfect operating of the ion-exchanger. Special salt is dosed into the salt unit. A control lamp on the front panel of the dishwasher flashes when the salt unit needs to be refilled.

Spray Arms:

Devices that rotate during the washing cycle due to the water pressure. Water is pumped into the spray arms. Because of the rotation, the water reaches all areas in the interior space of the dishwasher so that every dish gets in contact with the washing water.

Sump:

Area under the filter system where the circulating pump is located that pumps the washing water through the pipes into the spray arms.

Table Top Dishwasher:

A smaller model which fits on top of the kitchen work surface or can also be integrated into a kitchen cupboard. It has a lower capacity in contrast to a free-standing or build-in dishwashers.

Upper Baskets:

Dish rack above the lower basket. Because of the lower water pressure it is especially suited for smaller and delicate items, e.g. cups and glasses.

Water Hardness:

Water hardness is measured by the concentration of hardness components (calcium and magnesium ions) in the water. The higher the concentration of the hardness components is in the washing water, the lower is the ability for soap solution to lather which can lead to a lower cleaning result. In addition, hard water will also lead to clogging due to limescale formations in the dishwasher.
