Refreshing Summer Smoothies

On a hot and sticky summer day, it’s hard to build up the motivation to do anything – just maintaining a cool body temperature is an effort. When taking a dip in the pool or sitting in front of the fan while spraying yourself with water is out of the question, there is something else much quicker, easier and more effective you can do: make a soothing, ice-cold drink. For these following smoothie recipes, all you need is a blender and a bit of imagination to make a masterpiece in 30 seconds! Best of all, you can make these as guilty or guilt-free as you like.

Making the perfect banana smoothie

It’s at the top of the list because let’s face it – it’s just about everyone’s favourite smoothie (when made correctly). There’s a trick to getting this smoothie just right – that is, choosing the right banana! Make sure it’s ripe by looking at the colour of the banana. If it is green or a pale yellow, it’s not ready to use yet. Find one that is a deep yellow with dark splotches on its skin. The riper it is, the better your smoothie will taste.

Serves: 1

Prep: 2 minutes

Cook: less than 2 minutes

Ingredients

4-5 ice cubes

1 medium banana, halved

1 cup almond or coconut milk

2 tbsp yoghurt

1 tbsp rice malt syrup

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

Blitz ice cubes in blender.

Add all other ingredients into the blender.

Blend slowly, increasing speed until the mixture is smooth.

Try serving with fresh raspberries and cacao nibs sprinkled on top for some healthy texture.

Now just sit back and relax!

Get merry with berry

The best thing about berries is their natural sweetness, making them a great main ingredient for a delicious smoothie without the need for added sugar. This recipe is super simple and full of fresh flavours. If you want an even lighter smoothie, substitute the yoghurt for more ice. Still delicious and still refreshing!
