How to make Christmas bon bons

Christmas bon bons add a splash of excitement and colour to any table setting and kick start the festivities with a bang. But use a store-bought version and you may also get those cringe-worthy jokes, the flimsy paper hats and the useless plastic toys… If you want to step things up a notch this year, make your own and fill them with little surprises your guests will truly love. It’s easier than you think.

What you’ll need

  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Small gifts and jokes
  • Cracker snaps (available from craft stores)
  • Wrapping paper
  • Double-sided tape
  • Ribbon or string
  • Scissors

Step one: Fill the rolls

This is where the fun starts! Fill your toilet paper rolls with jokes, toys, family photos – the options are endless. You may even like to personalise the gifts, remembering which bon bon is for which lucky guest. Insert one cracker snap into each roll, ensuring it hangs out both ends.

Top tip: Make your own Christmas hats using tissue paper, scissors and tape. Use your own head as a guide for size then cut out triangle shapes around the top edge.

Step two: Wrap your bon bons

Cut wrapping paper to the length of three toilet paper rolls and wide enough to wrap around the bon bon with at least one centimetre of overlap. Place a gift-filled roll in the centre, then roll the paper around and secure with double-sided tape.

Step three: Twist and secure

Twist paper carefully at each end then use a piece of ribbon or string to secure.

One of the best things about making your own bon bons is that you can personalise them to suit your decorations and table setting, as well as your guests. You may like to add name stickers to each, or even a personal joke.

Merry Christmas and happy cracking!
