5 Dressings for Asian Greens

Are you bonkers for bok choy, or woeful without white radish? It’s probably because many Asian greens are actually categorised as superfoods, which means they are full of good nutrients for both the brain and body. Being very low in calories and high in fibre, Asian greens are the perfect salad choice for anyone, whether you’re health-conscious or just a regular salad-lover!

While salads are healthy and delicious, they can easily lack a little zest if served up the same way every time. Give your taste buds a treat and gobble up your gai lan with these simple salad dressings.

Sweet and Sour dressing

A delicious companion to any Asian salad mix, you can whip up this dressing in no time at all. Combine 1½ tablespoons of mirin seasoning, 2 tablespoons of rice wine vinegar, 2 teaspoons of dark soy sauce, 1 ½  teaspoons of caster sugar and 2 tablespoons of olive oil.

Spicy soy and ginger dressing

Spice up your Asian greens with a delicious and zesty dressing, designed to add that little bit of kick. It’s very easy to make and will no doubt become a firm favourite!

Combine 2 cloves of crushed garlic, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1 red chilli (seeds removed and finely diced), 1 tablespoon grated ginger, and the juice of one lemon in a bowl. Mix lightly with a spoon until the brown sugar dissolves. That’s it! Serve up alongside or drizzle over your Asian greens.

Simple dark sauce dressing

Usually used in stir-fries and other Asian cuisine, oyster sauce is fast becoming a popular staple, transitioning across to other meals including – you guessed it – Asian green salads. This dressing goes beautifully with steamed gai lan, but you can try it with almost any Asian green.

Combine ⅓ cup of oyster sauce with 1 tablespoon of fish sauce, 1 crushed garlic clove, and 1 red chilli (seeds removed and finely diced) in a jar. Secure lid and shake well. Pour over steamed gai lan or other asian greens.

Sweet peanut dressing

If you have a sweet tooth and a soft spot for creamy peanut butter, this dressing may just be the solution to your craving. With sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) being a main ingredient, you can be sure this dressing is delicious and there is an exciting thickness added from the peanuts.

Add 2 tablespoons of kecap manis, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (crunchy is best), 1 tablespoon of honey and a generous squeeze of lemon juice to the blender. Blend quickly until the peanut butter has evenly mixed into the sauce. Drizzle over your salad.

Honey soy dressing

Love honey soy chicken? Imagine being able to combine that with your everyday Asian salad. Now you can with this delicious and guilt-free salad dressing.

Grab 3 tablespoons of dark soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of honey, a 2cm piece of peeled and finely grated ginger and 1 red chilli (seeds removed and finely diced). Combine in a jug and gently whisk. Pour over your greens and sprinkle ½ teaspoon of sesame seeds over your salad to finish.
