Sydney's Freshest Farmer's Markets for Christmas

The places to go for great produce and inspiration for your Christmas feast

Get ready for your Christmas feast by heading off to your local farmer's markets! For starters there's great, in-season produce (usually grown close by) – so you know you're supporting the local farming community. But there's also the knowledge and inspiration you gain from talking to the producers about their wares. Here's a small selection of some of Sydney's best:

Shire Farmer's Market (Flora St car park, Sutherland (directly behind the Sutherland Entertainment Centre) If you're south-side, love food and a sense of community, these weekly markets in Sutherland could be your go-to. 'By foodies, for foodies', they're on a mission to provide quality Australian farm-fresh produce direct. They're also committed to the environmental aspects of food and agriculture. With that in mind, you'll need to bring your own bags. Head here each Friday to find a list of stallholders.

Castle Hill Farmers & Fine Food Market (Castle Hill Showground) The Hills District is well served by these bi-weekly markets offering a huge range of stalls and produce. You'll be able to find pretty much anything you fancy here, while enjoying a bite and your morning beverage of choice. And remember, these markets are pooch-friendly. Find out more about what's coming up here.

Camden Fresh Produce Market (Camden Town Farm, 40 Exeter St, Camden)  This weekly market is a 'genuine farmers market' – with strict rules to ensure that the person selling is the person who grows, produces or makes the product. So no surprise you get fantastic quality, with much of the produce locally-grown. Even if you don't live nearby, these markets are worth the excursion. Naturally, there are plenty of great things to eat and drink while you chat with the producers!

Marrickville Organic Market (Addison Road Centre, 142 Addison Road, Marrickville) These weekly markets serve the inner west with plenty of fresh produce as well as a multicultural array of dishes, drinks and products to keep your taste buds buzzing. While it's a chilled atmosphere (and dog friendly) it does get busy. But that's all the more reason to socialise while enjoying something delicious! Oh, and there are kids' activities and plenty of non-food market options there too!

Carriageworks Farmers Market (245 Wilson St, Eveleigh) A short walk from Redfern station, these markets attract a huge range of producers and shoppers. Get there early to find interesting, gourmet as well as 'regular' fresh produce. So if you're a first timer, you can expect to find things you mightn't normally see (or perhaps you do!). As such, this is a great place for culinary experimentation, with a chance to speak directly with the providores.
