Whether you are buying your next house or you have decided to continue renting somewhere else, you’ve made the monumental decision to move homes – congratulations! Here we look at the top five things to consider before making the big move.
The most important thing is working out what you can afford. Look at your income and work out how much you need for food and living expenses; factor in outgoings you are already committed to – your car or mobile phone, for example. Now look at the portion you have left. You will need money for your mortgage or rent AND utility bills - water, gas and electricity, and maybe a service charge.
If you’re renting, sometimes these bills are already included, especially if you are going into shared accommodation. If not the landlord or previous tenant should be able to give you an idea of how much they will be. Don’t forget additional costs such as broadband and content insurance etc. and anything you will have to pay up front – rental deposit, agency fees and so on.
Location, location, location
Now you’ve considered how you’ll live think about where you need to live. Consider the cost of travelling to college or work, the distance from your friends and family and where you spend a lot of your spare time. Don’t rule anywhere out without walking round the area first. Equally, don’t choose anywhere without spending time in the area either.
Needs versus wants
So, you’ve found your perfect pad - what do you need to move in? You will need some essentials such as a bed to sleep on, cooking appliances and of course somewhere to sit. Family can be a great help lending you larger items until you can afford your own and donating unwanted china, bedding, kitchenware, etc. You will want to make your new house feel like a home, especially after a long day at work you will want to look forward to coming home to relax. That is why having a dishwasher is so important. In addition to being an essential kitchen appliance, a dishwasher does all of the hard work for you allowing you to spend more time relaxing and doing the things you want to do. As you are gathering everything you need for your new home, it’s a good idea to make a list of necessary items and a separate list of items you want so you can prioritise.
Go on a (careful) shopping spree
Now you can fill in the gaps. There are the obvious things you must have – a fridge, cooker, cutlery and saucepans. Consider too all the little things you’ll need like a linen line and pegs, kitchen bin, washing-up bowl, can-opener and so on. They soon add up so it’s a good idea to prioritise in case you need to save some to buy another time.
Make moving simple
Whether you use a removal firm, rely on help from friends and family or make many trips in your own car; moving is a stressful business. Take a little strain out of it by ordering a supermarket grocery delivery to arrive at your new house shortly after you do. You’ll need cleaning products to wipe out cupboards and freshen bathrooms.
If you have a dishwasher, make sure you have dishwasher tablets! Finish Quantum Max Shine & Protect* gives you the brilliant clean and shine you would expect – as well as protecting all your new glasses from corrosion. It is also important to use a dishwasher cleaner before your first use. Try Finish Dishwasher Cleaner, this way you can rest assured your dishwasher is clean and ready to be used, in addition to having a lemon fragrance too. After all, the last thing you need to be doing on your first night in your new home is washing up by hand…
Obviously, you’ll also need plenty of tea and biscuits – and maybe a glass of something fizzy to celebrate when all the hard work is over!
