Hot trends in hot chocolate

There’s no arguing that a classic hot chocolate is like a warm hug in a mug. But although cocoa powder, a bit of sweetener and a few fluffy marshmallows will always hit the spot, an extra ingredient or two can really heat things up. Hop on board with these hot trends in hot chocolate for the whole family.

Soothing spiced chai choc

Infuse hot milk with a couple of whole cloves, a crushed cardamom pod, a slice of fresh ginger and a dash of vanilla-bean paste. Strain out the spices then stir through cocoa powder and honey to taste. Serve with a cinnamon stick.

Cheeky choc orange

Who needs classic sweeteners when marmalade is a perfectly acceptable alternative? Add a spoonful of orange marmalade to your hot milk, strain into a mug and stir through cocoa powder. Garnish with a twist of orange peel if you’re feeling fancy.

Salted white-hot caramel

Not for the faint of heart, this creamy white-chocolate version is a special indulgence. Whisk some chopped white choc into hot milk, sweeten with a spoonful of dulce de leche caramel and finish with a pinch of flaky sea salt. Listen for the angels singing.

Nutty professor

Up the ante on your hot chocolate after the kids are in bed with a shot of hazelnut liqueur, a spoonful of chocolate hazelnut spread and a splash of pure cream.

Milk-bar malt

We love chocolate-malt milkshakes during the summer, but who’s to say you can’t enjoy the same childhood favourite with a winter twist? Just add a scoop of malted milk powder to your favourite hot chocolate recipe and stir until smooth.

Top tip: As a special rainbow-coloured treat for the kids, snip marshmallows in half and dip the sticky cut side into a dish of hundreds and thousands.
